The Friends of Wasioja (FOW) would be pleased if you would join us in celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Minnesota entering into the American Civil War on June 24-26, 2011 in Wasioja, Minnesota. This invitation is intended with the hope that we may create an educational, historical and entertaining event on a local, state and national base.

Pre-registration: To be assured of bounties and encampment support; units/organizations/individuals must be pre-registered and certified by the Friends of Wasioja Military Coordinator. A pre-registration application is attached. Your anticipated roster is required. If your unit/organization is to enjoy the benefits that our event has to offer, applications for pre-registration must be submitted no later than March 1st, 2011. Civilian impressions are not eligible for bounties, nor do they count towards military unit bounties.
Bounties will be paid by the Paymaster Sunday, June 26th, morning. A bounty schedule is attached. Larry Werline (U.S. Grant) will be our USA overall commander, and Mark Hidelbaugh will be our CSA overall commander. They will set up the command structure. The battle scenarios for Friday, June 24th will be First Bull Run/Manassas; Saturday, June 25th will be Chickamauga; and Sunday, June 26th will be Appomattox. Subject to change as per over all (USA & CSA) commanders 
Units that have not pre-registered and are not listed as a unit that have attended a other events such as Gettysburg, Boscobel, WI, Pipestone, MN, etc , will not be allowed to maintain their individual unit status without proper permission from the Friends of Wasioja Military Coordinator and the respective Overall Commanders.  Individuals of these units may be brigaded to invited/vetted units as individuals. Any unit, which has not pre-registered, will not be eligible for bounty.
Artillery Units must be pre-registered no later than March 1st, 2011 to receive bounty as well as take to the field during the battles. Bounties will be paid only to the first 25 pre-registered cannons.  

SAFETY: Safety will not be compromised at any time throughout the event. All cannons must undergo a safety and authenticity inspection upon arrival at the encampment. Safety inspections will be performed on all weapons prior to and following each battle. Union and Confederate officers shall be responsible for the military, as prescribed in the “Manual of Arms”, and personal conduct and safe deportment of the troops under their command. Failure to exhibit appropriate personal and military behavior shall be grounds for dismissal for the duration of the current event, and the unit/individuals will be placed on probation for potential future endeavors.

 

RULES:

  1. Every reenactor, adult, or adults responsible for minors, must register upon arrival or as soon as possible and sign an indemnity waiver.
  2. All Troops must be assigned to a unit
  3. There will be separate camps for Union, Confederate and Civilian impressions. Upon registration, you will be directed to your designated area.
  4. Reenactors may begin arriving on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011, all units must be completely set up and ready for public review by 9:00 AM, CST,  Friday, June 24th, 2011.
  5. No non-period firearms or other weapons will be allowed in the encampment.
  6. No rank above Captain will be recognized, excepting medical and specialty impressions, without the prior approval from and by the organizers.
  7. All troops will be required to take part in mandatory or special drills and exhibit proficiency in the “Manual of Arms”. If an individual does not take part in the drill, that individual will not be able to take part in the battle reenactment that day. This requirement may be waived for individuals who demonstrate proficiency in the “Manual of Arms” to their Unit Commander’s satisfaction.
  8. All Units must conduct safety inspections prior to each battle. Units which do not, will not be allowed to take the field
  9. There will be no discharging of weapons off the designated battlefield or drill areas without permission.
  10. If a woman is portraying a first person military impression, she must conceal her feminine features, with the exception of vivandieres or other proof of historical evidence.
  11. All officers are required to attend the Officer’s Call. (see schedule)
  12. Reenactor-owned pets will be allowed in the encampment by advance permission of the organizers only.
  13. There will be no reenactor sales to the public within the encampment. Only pre-approved Sutlers will be allowed sales within the encampment.
  14. There will be No Motorized Vehicles within the encampment during open camp hours, with the exception of emergency and handicapped conveyances.
  15. Children are more than welcomed but are not the responsibility of the hosts. For their safety, they must be supervised at all times.

INFANTRY:

  1. It will be up to the respective commanding officers discretion whether or not a minor (under the age of 18) will take to the field
  2. Swords will be carried on the battlefields by officers only.
  3. Pistols will be loaded with black powder and cream of wheat type substance.
  4. Properly pre-loaded extra cylinders will be allowed on the field to extend  pistol use.
  5. No powder flasks or loose powder will be allowed on the field
  6. No modern “quick loads” will be allowed for muskets.
  7. A maximum amount of infantry (700) is being considered, therefore get your registration in early for your unit(s) involvement in a once in lifetime 150th Anniversary of Minnesota entering into the American Civil War.

ARTILLERY:

  1. Anyone manning the front of a cannon MUST be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Artillery short swords will be allowed as historically dictated.
  3. For cannon participating in the battle reenactment there will be strict safety inspection.

CAVALRY:

  1. Horse owners MUST present a current and valid Coggins test certification upon registration.
  2. Water, hay and straw will be provided. Bring your own feed.
  3. No stallions will be allowed
  4. Tack will be historically appropriate

CIVILAIN:

  1. U.S. Marshall will be responsible for the safety and conduct of civilian impressions

GENERAL RULES, GUIDELINES AND REQUESTS:

  1. Campfires—please remove sod carefully, keep moist, and replace before leaving the event.
  2. Clean up your campsite before you leave. Absolutely no trash or refuse to be buried in the fire pits.
  3. All participants, military and civilian, must dress in period style clothing and act in the manner appropriate for the years within the encampment during open hours camp hours. There shall be NO modern articles visible during the open camp hours. 
  4. Please exhibit self-control and moderation if consuming the devil’s brew in period vessels.
  5. Camp will be quiet at and after midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
  6. Camp will break at the bugle call on Sunday shortly after the battle.
  7. Please interact appropriately and knowledgeably with the public. Be prepared for guided encampment tours.

SUTLERS:

  1. A complimentary lunch and other amenities for Sutlers will be present. Sutlers will attend by invitation only.

Please do not violate the above rules. We do not want to be in the position to ask you to leave.

            AMENITIES:

  1. Sanitary portable toilet units will be dispersed throughout the encampment.
  2. Firewood will be available (free no cost, all hard wood oak or elm, split and dried)
  3. Potable water will be available
  4. Breakfast and lunches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be available by the Friends of Wasioja at a reduced cost with proper identification.
  5. Designated parking for reenactors and Sutlers will be across the road from the encampment.
  6. Ambulances, fire equipment and EMT will be present during the entire three days.
  7. Dignitary Dinner on Thursday, June 23rd at the famous Hubbell House in Mantorville, MN is for a fundraising event and photo opportunity.
  8. Dress Military/Civilian Ball Saturday evening will be available (barring inclement weather)
  9. Lady’s Garden Party Saturday afternoon at a local residence
  10. Children’s Activities throughout the weekend in the encampment
  11. Church Call at the First Church in Dodge County
  12. Guided Encampment Tours throughout the three days
  13. Period Workshops and Demonstration throughout the three days
  14. First Person Impressions
  15. Interaction with Dignitaries

PERSONNEL BOUNTIES:

Applies only to pre-registered and certified units/organizations which take to the field.

Amortized as per person for each uniformed personnel that is pre-registered. Example if your unit has 30 uniformed personnel pre-registered you would receive $240.00.

Plus a ration of bacon, eggs, bread, butter, fruit, potatoes, carrots and onions will be issued for pre-registered units and as per the number of uniformed personnel on the pre-roster in each unit.

Plus breakfast and lunch will be available at reduced costs for pre-registered uniformed personnel units at the Friends of Wasioja Food Stand.

CAVALRY BOUNTIES:

Mounted only which take the field. Applies only to military impressions from pre-registered and certified units/organizations.

  1. $25.00 per pre-registration and certified horse fielded on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  2. Hay, straw and water will be provided
  3. Plus a ration of bacon, eggs, bread, butter, fruit, potatoes, carrots and onions will be issued for pre-registered units as per the number of cavalrymen on the roster in each unit.
  4. Plus breakfast and lunch will be available at a reduced costs for pre-registered uniformed cavalrymen at the Friends of Wasioja Food Stand

ARTILLERY BOUNTIES:

  1. Limited to the first 25 cannons pre-registered by March 1st, 2011.
  2. Applies only to military impressions from the pre-registered and certified units/organizations.
  3. $100.00 for each full scale or ¾ scale artillery piece
  4. $75.00 paid for mountain howitzers and small-scale artillery
  5. Only one bounty per cannon
  6. Due to physical constraints and field safety, the number of cannons utilized on the battlefield may have to be limited.
  7. John Fritshe, New Ulm Battery, will be distributing the required and recommended cannon grade powder. This will be an additional amenity to the above bounties. John will also be in charge for authenticity and period correctness.
  8. Plus a ration of bacon, eggs, bread, butter, fruit, potatoes, carrots and onions will be issued for pre-registered units as per the number on the roster.
  9. Plus breakfast and lunch will be available at reduced costs for pre-registered uniformed cannon personnel at the Friends of Wasioja Food Stand.
